How often do we contemplate why some people have challenging and captivating persona? They go up, above and beyond their qualities out of nowhere to distinction and have speedy career steps forward. Some of them we spot delivering talks at the business schools, addressing professional conferences and industry meets and are often covered by the media. They are usually spotted sharing their success stories on the social media. Are these individuals just well-groomed than the rest? Or do they have a ‘Midas’ touch in their approach that we may not be familiar with? On the contrary the reason so many of us fails to generate satisfying inner and exterior self to find out how best to “connect the dots.” Regularly most of us at some point of time in our lives look at someone who seems to have an aura along with the charm, good attitudes, confidence etc. We wish we could be like that too. For instance, as a school kid, I would always emulate my late elder brother (we lost him young). He displayed an immaculate personality. His flawless communications, conduct and temperament, positivity to the core, highly empathetic, and an upright inside out are still fresh in my mind. On looking back, I feel some of his qualities have acted like a plant sapling in my being.
Building self-understanding habitually seems easy but initiating and carrying forward the process is always difficult. It therefore may be the starting point to stand out from the pack by reinventing and rebuilding “YOU”. So what is that we plan to change? For a strong and successful transition, there is unquestionably need to identify what is making us unhappy and what will make us fulfilled and contended. Why doesn’t each one of us consider ourselves as a ‘Personal Brand’ and work on developing our total ‘Self’? What impressions do we carry and portray to others? Does our reputation define and convey our uniqueness, values and personality attributes better than others. To influence and swing our Personal Brand, it is important to be poised and flexible so that we are noticed by everyone. It is often seen that good influencers with their personal impact and presence consequently leave a strong feelings behind.

Powerful personal impact is in a way reflection of our character and helps evaluating our competencies, standards and style to remain upbeat and in reckoning. It is a preamble to our being and can inspire and have a magnetic influence around. Most people emphasize and work on their exterior self but the core and base of personal impact will always remain our inner personality attributes such as optimistic thinking, constructive mind-set and upbeat feelings. These help in fostering immaculate presentation and build an ambience around us. Lydia Ramsey in her book “Manners That Sell” states that, “It takes a few seconds to make a negative impression and a lifetime to overcome one”. Studies have depicted that 55% of how people judge us is based on what they see, 7% is based on the words they hear, and 35%on tone of voice.
Competence and skills alone do not craft our persona. What is equally required is how we are able to generate a positive personal force such as: ambience, self-belief, trust, personal values, strong communication skills and leading from the front. Being technically good at our job isn’t enough today – strong people skills are equally essential and help in differentiating us from our competitors. Irrespective of our role, we need to be able to make a great first impression, connect with others, present our ideas assertively and have lasting relationships etc. Positive personal impact surely creates charm and people come down around us, want to be seen and associated with us and may also role model us. Setbacks, frustrations and letdowns are common and how we manage these satisfactorily surely adds to our personal impact.

I think that it is important that with the communication skills one is able to sell ones ideas and thoughts. I agree that beside your domain knowledge one takes a wider area of learning to be able to sell ones ideas. In a narrow range of one's knowledge one will not be able to hard sell.
ReplyDeleteLike one of my seniors used to say to be known you have to sound the drum forcefully for you to be able to sell yourself and ideas
APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS. THANKS. HOWEVER MY TAKE ON THE SUBJECT IS THAT ONE NEEDS TO BE SOMEWHAT A PERSONAL BRAND IN THE ORGANIZATION, HAVE PAREXCELLENT LEADERSHIP QUALITIES. EVEN IF HE/SHE DOESN'T FORCEFULLY SOUND THE DRUM, YET THE PERSON WOULD BE KNOWN BECAUSE OF THE DISTINGUISHED QUALITIES. IT WOULD I FEEL BE LIKE BEING A FIREFLY.
